The quest for beautiful skin, hair, and nails is a lot like the quest for the fountain of youth; people have been looking for centuries to discover what we can do to maintain our skin, hair, and nail’s youthful glow.
And as parents, we need whatever shortcut you can offer us to get it all done quickly, with minimal effort. We’re busy chasing kids around- we don’t have time to mess around.
It turns out our bodies are complex machines that need fuel to work properly. Our fuel comes from our diet. If we feed our bodies the wrong fuel, our “engines” aka, our bodies, don’t run correctly. We get sick, our skin gets wrinkly, our bodies get heavier, and our hair starts to thin or fall out. Our bodies can no longer repair themselves with the wrong fuel, which also contributes to our lackluster appearances.
A lot of how our skin, hair, and nails look and feel depend on what we eat and put into our bodies. The foods we eat have a profound impact on the condition of our hair, skin, and nails. If you eat the right foods, your skin may have less wrinkles, less breakouts, less thinning or hair loss, and would help moisturize your skin, giving you a healthy complexion!
Luckily, we have compiled a list of foods for us busy parents that will enhance your features, and these foods are not hard to find! Make sure you incorporate these foods into your daily routine, and you’ll be glowing in no time.
Veggies…and Fruit as well
The first one is easy enough: eat your fruits and vegetables! I think we can all say we know that we should be eating more fruits and vegetables, but we may not have known that fruits and vegetables are key in helping our appearances stay youthful and healthy. Some fruits and vegetables reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, which can cause premature aging, different kinds of diseases, acne, psoriasis, and wrinkles. Vitamin C, which is needed for collagen– the protein that holds the whole body together and is essential for skin, hair and nails- is also present in some fruits and vegetables. Do some of your own research to find out which ones have the most of what you need for radiant hair, skin, and nails.
Oils, Fatty Fish and Fermented Foods
Oils, fish, and fermented foods contain essential fatty acids and vitamin E, needed to maintain the skin. Fermented foods like yogurt and sauerkraut contain probiotics. These improve digestion, your overall health and your skin health. Rich in omega-3’s, protein, vitamin B12, and Selenium, which are all important for your skin’s health.
Whole Grains
Whole grains contain Prebiotics and are very important for healthy skin as they help grow good bacteria inside your gut. This then improves your immune system, overall health, and the absorption of essential nutrients, which are all important for beautiful skin.
Spices & Herbs
Spices and herbs are also shown to help aid skin, hair, and nails. Turmeric and garlic are both shown to help with various dermatological issues. Other benefits include wound healing, and prevention of hair loss and acne.
Make sure you avoid…
Sugar, Sugar and once again, Sugar. One major thing to NOT eat is sugar. High blood sugar can affect collagen, which weakens the skin and could lead to lines and wrinkles. When people eat sugar or carbs, the sugar causes a spike of insulin, which binds to hair follicles and cause the hair to fall out. Besides being unhealthy for you in general, sugar really does damage to your hair, skin, and nails.
